Srinagar, Aug 14 : Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has reiterated that the Indus Waters Treaty should remain suspended, asserting that the region must be able to utilise its water resources for drinking water, navigation and hydropower. Speaking to reporters, Omar also criticised the recent attack in which individuals were injured, questioning how such an incident could take place despite assurances of enhanced Z-plus security. He said there was no place for violence in a democracy and stressed that political differences should be expressed through elections rather than attacks. Referring to the security arrangements, the Chief Minister recalled that a similar incident had taken place in Amritsar earlier, after which assurances were reportedly given regarding increased security, and questioned the effectiveness of those measures following the latest incident. On the Indus Waters Treaty, Omar said Jammu and Kashmir had historically faced limitations in fully utilising its rivers and maintained that the region has a strong claim over its water resources. He said the continued suspension of the treaty would allow J&K to pursue greater use of its rivers for hydropower generation, navigation and drinking water needs. On political developments, Omar Abdullah said discussions were underway on various options, including reports of a possible long march to Leh, and described such a programme as a positive development. He also referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s earlier promise regarding the restoration of the region’s political status, questioning why the commitment had not yet been fulfilled. Referring to the recent Jantar Mantar protest, Omar said it was “just the beginning” and maintained that he would continue raising the issue. He added that further political programmes and future steps would be discussed and decided at an appropriate time.
