Siwan, Bihar, July 27: Police personnel allegedly seen firing an AK-47 during a student protest in Bihar’s Siwan have been suspended, Superintendent of Police Puran Kumar Jha said on Monday.The action follows unrest linked to protests over the NEET paper leak controversy. Demonstrations in Siwan turned violent, with reports of stone-pelting and clashes between protesters and police. Security personnel used tear gas and resorted to a lathicharge to disperse demonstrators demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.Similar unrest was reported in Patna during a statewide shutdown called by opposition parties and social organisations. Protesters allegedly vandalised and overturned police vehicles, leading to increased security deployment in affected areas.Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi strongly criticised the Narendra Modi government over the police response. In a post on X, Gandhi alleged that excessive force, including AK-47 firing in Bihar and pellet guns elsewhere, was being used against protesting students. He demanded an unconditional apology from the Prime Minister and accountability for security personnel involved.
