Security Tightened Around Srinagar’s Martyrs’ Graveyard for Second Consecutive Day

Srinagar, July 15: Security restrictions continued for the second consecutive day in parts of Srinagar on Tuesday as authorities maintained strict measures to prevent public gatherings around the Martyrs’ Graveyard (Mazar-e-Shuhada) at Naqshband Sahib.A heavy deployment of Jammu and Kashmir Police and paramilitary forces remained in the Nowhatta and Naqshband Sahib areas of the old city to maintain law and order. Movement restrictions also continued at several sensitive locations as a precautionary measure. The security arrangements come a day after authorities sealed the Martyrs’ Graveyard and nearby areas on July 13, preventing public assemblies to mark the anniversary of the 1931 Kashmir martyrs.July 13 commemorates the 22 protesters who were killed by the Dogra army outside Srinagar Central Jail in 1931, a date that continues to hold historical significance for many in Kashmir. The administration has not announced how long the restrictions will remain in place, while security personnel continue to monitor the area to prevent any large gatherings.
