SRINAGAR, July 31: The Supreme Court on Friday disposed of the divorce case involving Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and his estranged wife Payal Abdullah after the two sides informed the court that they had reached a settlement in their long-running matrimonial dispute.A bench comprising Justices P.S. Narasimha and Alok Aradhe accepted the settlement. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Omar Abdullah, informed the court that the dispute had been resolved and sought disposal of the proceedings on the agreed terms.Following the submission, the Supreme Court disposed of the case, bringing the prolonged legal proceedings before the apex court to an end.Omar Abdullah had moved the courts seeking divorce in 2016, citing irretrievable breakdown of the marriage and alleging cruelty. His petition was rejected by the family court and later by the Delhi High Court, which held that the allegations had not been sufficiently established.Omar Abdullah subsequently challenged the Delhi High Court decision before the Supreme Court.In August 2024, the apex court referred the matrimonial dispute to mediation after both sides sought intervention. The proceedings were later adjourned in January 2025 to allow the mediation process to continue.Omar Abdullah and Payal Abdullah married in 1994 and have reportedly been living separately since 2009.
