SRINAGAR: The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) reopened for traffic on Saturday after restoration teams cleared landslide debris and shooting stones from multiple vulnerable locations in Ramban district, restoring connectivity on the Kashmir Valley’s only all-weather road link with the rest of the country.Officials said the highway was made operational following continuous restoration work carried out after recent heavy rainfall triggered landslides and rockfalls at several stretches. Road clearance teams worked round the clock to remove debris and ensure the safe movement of vehicles.As per the latest traffic plan, Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs), including private cars and passenger vehicles, are permitted to travel in both directions between Jammu and Srinagar. Meanwhile, Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs) and other load carriers are being regulated primarily from Udhampur towards Srinagar, subject to favourable weather and road conditions.The reopening has brought major relief to hundreds of stranded passengers, transporters, and truck operators whose journeys were disrupted due to the highway closure. Restoration work, however, is still underway at several landslide-prone locations to minimise the risk of further disruptions.Authorities have advised commuters to follow traffic police instructions, drive cautiously through vulnerable stretches, and check the latest NH-44 traffic updates, Jammu-Srinagar Highway status, and weather advisories before beginning their journey, as changing weather conditions may still impact traffic movement.
