NEW DELHI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has projected that India’s monsoon rainfall in 2026 is likely to be around 90 percent of the Long Period Average (LPA), indicating a slightly below-normal Southwest Monsoon season across large parts of the country.
According to the latest IMD Monsoon Forecast 2026, Northeast India is expected to receive normal rainfall, while several other regions may experience below-normal monsoon rainfall, raising concerns for agriculture, water availability, and crop production.
The updated India weather forecast was released as part of the weather department’s second outlook for the Southwest Monsoon 2026. Earlier, in its first forecast issued on April 13, the IMD had estimated 92 percent of the Long Period Average rainfall, but the latest assessment has revised the figure downward to 90 percent.
Experts say the monsoon forecast for India plays a crucial role in determining agricultural output, reservoir levels, and rural economic activity. A weaker-than-average rainfall season could impact farming communities that rely heavily on timely monsoon showers.
The latest IMD rainfall prediction is being closely monitored by policymakers, farmers, and weather experts as the country prepares for the upcoming monsoon season.
