GMC Srinagar Becomes J&K’s Highest-Ranked Medical College, Secures 80th Spot in India.

Srinagar, Aug 7: Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar has emerged as the highest-ranked medical college in Jammu and Kashmir, securing the 80th position among India’s top MBBS colleges in the latest Indian Institutional Ranking Framework (IIRF) MBBS Rankings 2026. The achievement makes GMC Srinagar the first medical college from J&K to feature among the country’s top 100 MBBS institutions.The ranking recognises institutions based on academic excellence, teaching quality, research output, clinical exposure, infrastructure, industry collaboration, placements, innovation, and overall institutional performance. GMC Srinagar’s inclusion reflects its growing reputation as one of India’s leading government medical colleges.Established in 1959, GMC Srinagar is the oldest and one of the premier medical colleges in Jammu and Kashmir. Over the decades, it has produced thousands of doctors and specialists while serving as the region’s major tertiary healthcare and medical education centre through its associated hospitals.The recognition comes shortly after another significant milestone for the institution. The National Medical Commission (NMC) recently approved an increase of 50 MBBS seats, raising the annual intake from 200 to 250 students from the 2026-27 academic session. This marks the second consecutive increase in undergraduate seats, further strengthening medical education in Jammu and Kashmir.College authorities attributed the achievement to sustained improvements in medical education, clinical training, faculty development, patient care, and research. The latest ranking further reinforces GMC Srinagar’s position as the leading government medical college in J&K and highlights its growing national recognition.
