Srinagar, Aug 6: National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah on Thursday reiterated that protests demanding the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood will continue, asserting that the developments of August 5, 2019, were unconstitutional.
Speaking to reporters, Abdullah said there is growing support for the demand across the country.
“Everyone knows that what happened on August 5, 2019, is unconstitutional. The protests will continue, and you have already seen the demonstration held in Parliament,” he said.
The BJP-led Central Government revoked Article 370 and reorganised the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh on August 5, 2019.
When asked about his party’s roadmap on statehood, the former Chief Minister said the National Conference has a clear policy on the issue and remains committed to pursuing the restoration of statehood.
Responding to questions regarding remarks made by Union Minister Giriraj Singh against PDP president Mehbooba Mufti, Abdullah declined to comment, saying she is capable of responding herself.
The remarks came a day after political protests and programmes were held across Jammu and Kashmir on the seventh anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370. The National Conference and other opposition parties renewed their demand for the restoration of statehood and constitutional rights.
