Driver assaulted, vehicle damaged in J&K

Banihal, Apr 1: A driver was allegedly assaulted and his vehicle damaged by a group of persons in the Gund area of Banihal, prompting police to register an FIR and launch an investigation, officials said.According to a complaint lodged at Police Station Banihal, the victim, identified as Mohdmammd Qasim, son of Habibullah a resident of Hirnihal tehsil Khari, stated that he was travelling from Khari to Banihal with passengers when his vehicle was intercepted near Gund Banihal at around noon.

He alleged that one Mohdmammd Asif Wani of Gund, along with several unidentified associates, forcibly stopped the vehicle, dragged him out, and assaulted him without provocation. The attackers reportedly beat him with fists and also used an iron rod, causing multiple injuries.The complainant further stated that the accused persons damaged his vehicle by repeatedly striking it, shattering the front glass. Passengers and passersby present at the scene intervened and rescued the driver from the attackers.

When news of the alleged assault reached Khari, a large number of people gathered at the Tehsil Headquarters Khari and staged a protest against the incident. The protesters blocked local traffic by staging a sit-in on the Khari–Mahoo road.The demonstrators demanded strict action against those involved and called for legal proceedings against the accused.Block President of the Gujjar Bakarwal Conference Khari, Hafiz Choudhary Mohammad Yousuf, strongly condemned the incident and urged the police to ensure that those involved in the assault of driver Choudhary Mohammad Qasim are given exemplary punishment so that no one dares to commit such an act again.SHO Banihal Syed Aashiq Bukhari told Greater Kashmir that Police have registered a case under FIR No. 55/2026 under section 115(2), 126(2), 324 191(2) BNS at Police Station Banihal, and the investigation has been entrusted to SI Nazir Ahmed for further necessary legal action.
