DGP Nalin Prabhat Reviews Security in Downtown Srinagar Ahead of July 13,Martyr’s Day

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat on Monday carried out a comprehensive review of the security situation across downtown Srinagar, inspecting deployments and operational preparedness ahead of July 13 amid restrictions imposed around Mazar-e-Shuhada (Martyrs’ Graveyard). The DGP was accompanied by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir V.K. Birdi, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Central Kashmir and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Srinagar. The senior officers reviewed the overall security arrangements and assessed law and order measures across sensitive areas of the old city.During the visit, Nalin Prabhat inspected security deployment near Naqshband Sahib shrine, where he interacted with police personnel and officials stationed on duty. He directed officers to remain vigilant and ensure foolproof security arrangements while maintaining peace and public order. The review comes as authorities have tightened security and imposed restrictions around Mazar-e-Shuhada to prevent gatherings and visits by political leaders and members of the public intending to pay tributes to the 1931 martyrs on July 13.Police officials said the security audit was aimed at strengthening deployment, enhancing operational readiness and ensuring a peaceful atmosphere across Srinagar during the observance.July 13 is observed by many in Kashmir as the anniversary of the 1931 incident, when protesters were killed after being fired upon during the rule of Maharaja Hari Singh. The day was previously observed as a public holiday in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, with official commemorations held every year. However, following the August 2019 reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories, the administration removed July 13 from the list of gazetted holidays in 2020, ending official state observances.
