Srinagar, September 7: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has called for an early resolution of the ongoing issue concerning MBBS interns’ stipend, saying their work and internship are being affected by the prolonged matter.
Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, Omar Abdullah said the issue falls under the jurisdiction of the Health and Medical Education Department and can only be resolved once the concerned department takes action.
“I would like this matter to be resolved as soon as possible. This is not for anyone’s benefit. First of all, their work is suffering. Their internship is suffering,” the Chief Minister said.
He added that Health and Medical Education Minister Sakina Itoo has taken up the matter with the concerned authorities and, according to him, has received an assurance regarding its resolution.
MBBS Interns’ Stipend Revision Demand
The issue relates to the demand of MBBS trainee doctors in Jammu and Kashmir for a substantial revision in their monthly stipend.
Earlier, Minister Sakina Itoo had termed the interns’ demand genuine and said the matter was under consideration with the Finance Department. She said the process had been initiated on the directions of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
“I told them that their demand is genuine. We are helping you in this. You don’t need to strike,” Itoo had said.
MBBS trainee doctors across government medical colleges in Jammu and Kashmir had been observing an indefinite strike, pressing the government to revise their stipend. The protesting interns had also warned of a hunger strike if their demand was not addressed
