CBI Arrests J&K PWD Assistant Engineer in ₹30,000 Bribery Case, Caught Red-Handed.

Jammu, July 17: In a significant anti-corruption operation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Public Works Department (PWD) Assistant Engineer of Jammu & Kashmir posted under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe to process a compensation claim. According to the CBI, the case was registered on July 16 following a complaint that the complainant’s house was damaged during the construction of the Thathri–Kathawa PMGSY road project in Doda district, making him eligible for compensation of around ₹10 lakh. It was alleged that the Assistant Engineer demanded a ₹50,000 bribe to facilitate the release of the compensation amount and later agreed to accept ₹30,000 after negotiations. Acting on the complaint, the CBI laid a well-planned trap and caught the accused red-handed while demanding and accepting the ₹30,000 bribe, leading to his immediate arrest. The accused has been taken into custody, and further legal proceedings have been initiated. The CBI said the investigation is continuing to ascertain whether any other officials were involved in the alleged corruption. The arrest is being viewed as a major step in the agency’s ongoing crackdown on corruption in government departments and development projects across Jammu & Kashmir, reinforcing its commitment to ensuring transparency, accountability and clean governance in the implementation of public welfare schemes.
