SRINAGAR, July 13: The Jammu and Kashmir BJP has served a ₹100 crore defamation notice on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah over his recent allegations that the party tried to lure National Conference (NC) MLAs with cash and ministerial posts to topple the government.Calling the claims “false, baseless, and defamatory,” the BJP has demanded that Omar Abdullah issue a written retraction and an unconditional public apology within seven days. The party has warned that failure to comply will lead to both civil and criminal legal action, including a ₹100 crore defamation lawsuit. The controversy began after Omar Abdullah, while addressing NC workers at Hazratbal, alleged that BJP leaders attempted to engineer defections by offering ₹20–30 crore, ministerial berths, and promises related to J&K statehood to NC legislators from the Jammu region. The legal notice, issued through advocate Parimoksh Seth on behalf of J&K BJP president and Rajya Sabha MP Sat Paul Sharma, states that the allegations have severely damaged the party’s reputation and misled the public.According to the notice, Omar Abdullah also claimed that a senior BJP office-bearer and Supreme Court lawyer was involved in making the alleged offers. The BJP has categorically denied the accusations, describing them as malicious, fabricated, and completely without evidence. The notice further directs the Chief Minister to immediately withdraw the allegations, refrain from making similar statements in the future, and stop circulating any content that the BJP considers defamatory. If the demands are not met within the stipulated period, the BJP says it will initiate civil and criminal defamation proceedings, including a ₹100 crore compensation claim, before a competent court.
