U.S. President Donald Trump has warned Iran to immediately remove any naval mines from the Strait of Hormuz, threatening “military consequences never seen before” if the mines are not cleared.
Trump said the U.S. military had already struck and destroyed 10 Iranian mine-laying boats and ships in the vital shipping lane shortly after issuing the warning.
According to U.S. officials, intelligence suggested Iran may be preparing to deploy naval mines in the strait using small boats capable of carrying several explosives.
The U.S. military has been targeting vessels and facilities linked to mine-laying operations to prevent disruption of the waterway, which carries around one-fifth of the world’s oil supply.
The warning marks a major escalation in the ongoing U.S.–Iran conflict, as Washington vows to keep the critical maritime route open for global energy shipments.
