Police Register Case Against BJP Leader Over Alleged Cheating, Criminal Intimidation in South Kashmir

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered a case against BJP Kisan Morcha leader Aijaz Ahmad Shah over allegations of cheating and criminal intimidation in Pulwama district, officials said. The case was registered at Tral Police Station in South Kashmir under Sections 420 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Officials said the alleged incident took place in 2022, when the IPC was in force, before it was replaced by the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in July 2024. According to the complaint, the Pulwama BJP leader allegedly took money from the complainant on the pretext of helping him with a matter involving the police. The allegations are being investigated by the authorities, and the accused is entitled to due process under law. Shah, who was appointed vice president of the Pulwama Kisan Morcha in November last year, has reportedly faced eight similar cases registered at four police stations in Pulwama district since 2016, officials said. The latest FIR is the third case registered against the BJP leader this year, according to officials. The development has drawn attention in South Kashmir as Jammu and Kashmir Police continue to investigate cases involving allegations of cheating, intimidation and other offences. The latest action comes a week after police registered an FIR against BJP Pulwama district president Showkat Gayoor on August 11 over alleged extortion and threats. Following that case, the BJP suspended Gayoor from all party positions pending disciplinary proceedings. BJP leader Altaf Thakur, who also hails from the Tral area, declined to comment on the latest case against Shah. The police case against the Pulwama BJP leader is now expected to proceed through the legal process as investigators examine the allegations and evidence. The development remains a significant South Kashmir news story amid continued political and law-enforcement activity in Pulwama, Tral and Jammu and Kashmir.
