One Dead, Three Hurt as Elevated Earth Portion Collapses at Excavation Site in…..

Pulwama, March 12: One labourer was killed and three others were injured after an elevated portion of soil along with stones collapsed during an excavation incident in Tumchi Nowpora village of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Thursday, officials said.

The incident occurred during soil excavation work when a section of elevated earth suddenly gave way, trapping workers under debris and stones at the site.

The deceased has been identified as Zubair Ahmed, a resident of Rajouri district, officials said.

The collapse triggered panic among workers present at the site, following which locals and fellow labourers rushed to rescue the trapped persons and shifted them to a nearby medical facility.

Three other labourers sustained injuries in the incident and were taken to hospital for treatment. Their condition was stated to be critical, officials said.

Police and local authorities reached the site soon after receiving information and initiated necessary procedures while assessing the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Officials said preliminary information suggests that the collapse occurred when the elevated soil structure weakened during excavation activities.

Locals of the area said such incidents occasionally occur during digging works in areas with loose soil and stones, particularly when excavation is carried out near elevated ground.

Authorities said further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact cause of the incident.
