NC MLA Masoodi warns liquor ban may hit tourism, revenues in J&K

Jammu, March 30: National Conference (NC) MLA Hasnain Masoodi on Monday said a complete ban on liquor in Jammu and Kashmir could adversely impact tourism and government revenues, while also raising concerns about enforcement and potential smuggling.

Speaking to reporters outside the Assembly, Masoodi said the issue requires a balanced approach, taking into account both social concerns and economic realities.

The remarks come amid growing debate over prohibition, with many legislators advocating a ban citing its impact on families and social fabric.

Masoodi acknowledged these concerns, saying many believe liquor consumption harms households, but stressed that economic implications must also be considered.

“Liquor is a major source of revenue, and we have to keep that in mind,” he said.

He said the government currently earns around ₹4,000 crore annually from liquor-related revenues, which contributes significantly to the Union Territory’s finances.

The MLA cautioned that a complete ban could affect budgetary allocations and development works.

“Our finances will be hit, and that will impact development,” he said.

Masoodi also questioned the effectiveness of prohibition, citing experiences from states like Bihar and Gujarat where liquor is banned but illegal trade persists.

He said such bans have often led to an increase in smuggling and the availability of spurious liquor, sometimes resulting in loss of lives.

“Even if liquor is banned, will it be effective without smuggling?” he asked.

The NC leader said policy decisions should consider all perspectives, including those supporting prohibition and those opposing it.

“Both sides should be heard, and all factors must be taken into account, particularly the economic one,” he said.

He also highlighted the potential impact on tourism, noting that Jammu and Kashmir is a major tourist destination and policy changes could have broader implications for the sector.

Masoodi said past experiences suggest that enforcing a complete ban may be difficult, and any decision should be based on practical considerations. [KNT]
