Kulgam Police on Wednesday carried out surprise inspections of SIM card vendors across the district to ensure strict compliance with Know Your Customer (KYC) norms and to prevent unauthorized activations of mobile connections without proper verification.

Police teams visited multiple locations during the drive, checking documentation processes and scrutinizing vendor records to ensure that all SIM cards were issued in line with the guidelines prescribed by telecom authorities. Officers also interacted with vendors, reminding them of their critical role in preventing misuse of mobile networks for unlawful or anti-national purposes.

Superintendent of Police Kulgam, Sahil Sarangal (IPS), who supervised the inspection drive, said that enforcing KYC regulations is key to maintaining secure communication systems. “Ensuring strict adherence to KYC norms is vital for preventing the misuse of mobile networks. Vendors are the first line of defense in safeguarding communication systems, and their cooperation is essential for maintaining security and public trust,” he said.

The inspections were aimed at tightening oversight on SIM card issuance in light of past instances where unverified or fraudulently obtained SIMs were used in criminal and subversive activities.

The drive, officials said, is part of Kulgam Police’s wider efforts to enhance public safety, ensure responsible telecom operations, and curb potential security threats emerging from the misuse of communication channels
