
Jammu and Kashmir Police have issued a public advisory warning citizens against fake social media advertisements being used by cybercriminals to steal money, personal data and identities.Police said scammers are using sponsored posts on major social media platforms to promote deceptive offers, including free gifts worth ₹10,000, steep discounts and easy returns. These advertisements are often accompanied by urgent messages and links from unknown or suspicious accounts.87According to the advisory, fraudsters may impersonate established brands and use fake logos or purported celebrity endorsements to make fraudulent advertisements appear genuine. Victims can be directed to malicious links and persuaded to share sensitive personal or financial information, including one-time passwords (OTPs).Police have advised citizens to verify the source of online advertisements and remain cautious of offers that appear too good to be true. People have also been urged not to share banking details or other sensitive information and to avoid clicking on unfamiliar links.Citizens should also report suspicious advertisements or social media accounts. Those who fall victim to cyber fraud should immediately contact the national cybercrime helpline at 1930 or file a complaint through the official cybercrime portal at cybercrime.gov.in.
