Srinagar, August 21: The Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court has sought a response from the authorities on a petition filed by National Conference (NC) MLA Hilal Akbar Lone over the delay in issuance of his passport.
Lone, who represents the Sonawari Assembly constituency, approached the Srinagar wing of the High Court after his passport was not issued despite submitting an application. The matter was heard by Justice Rahul Bharti on August 18, 2026.
The J&K High Court issued notice to the respondents and directed them to submit their response to the writ petition within three weeks. The case has been listed for further hearing on September 15, 2026.
Lone was elected from Sonawari in the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections on an NC ticket and is currently serving as an MLA.
The petition has been registered as WP(C) No. 2018/2026, along with CM No. 5465/2026. Lone is represented by advocate Shuja Ul Haq.
The respondents include the Union of India and other authorities. The court order does not specify the reason for the passport delay, the date of the application or whether any verification remains pending.
At this stage, the High Court has only sought a response from the authorities and has not made any finding against them on the merits of the petition.
The case will now come up for further hearing in September as the court examines the circumstances surrounding the passport delay involving the J&K National Conference MLA.
