Iran-US tensions: Trump is not happy with Iran talks, urges ‘no enrichment

US President Donald Trump said that he was “not happy” with the progress of negotiations with Iran over its nuclear programme and that he does not want any enrichment for Iran. US secretary of state Marco Rubio said on Friday that he has designated Iran as a state sponsor of wrongful detention. The department has also warned Americans not to travel to the country and has urged all American nationals in Iran to leave immediately.

Turk on Friday said he was “extremely alarmed” at the risk of a regional escalation around Iran. “I am extremely alarmed about the potential for regional military escalation and its impact on civilians, and I hope the voice of reason prevails,” Turk was quoted as saying by AFP.While Iran and mediator Oman showed optimism over talks with the US in Geneva on Thursday saying great progress had been made, the same wasn’t true for the American side.Reports said that US representatives, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, left Geneva rather ‘disappointed’ as they were not happy with the progress of the talks.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump’s claim that Iran is developing missiles that could hit the US came under scanner as the claim is unsupported by the US intelligence, Reuters reported quoting sources. During his State of the Union address on Tuesday, Trump had said that Iran missiles threaten the US as he sharpened the pitch against Tehran saying he wouldn’t allow it to have nuclear weapons, dubbing Iran as ‘world’s no. 1 sponsor of terrorism’.Meanwhile, Oman’s foreign minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi is likely to meet US vice president in Washington on Friday as Oman is mediating the talks between the two sides. The meeting comes a day after the conclusion of third round of talks between Tehran and Washington in Geneva on Thursday as the threat of US attack on Iran looms, though the talks showed some progress, according to reports.
