Devotees complain of unhygienic washrooms outside Hazratbal shrine

Srinagar, Jan 21: Devotees visiting the Hazratbal shrine in Srinagar have raised serious concerns over the unhygienic condition of washrooms and lavatories located outside the revered shrine, terming them almost unfit for use.

Several devotees said the washrooms are poorly maintained, with dirty commodes and an overpowering foul smell making it difficult to stay inside even for a minute. They said the unsanitary conditions are causing inconvenience, particularly to elderly worshippers, women and those coming from far-flung areas.

Locals and devotees alleged that despite the shrine witnessing a steady inflow of visitors throughout the year, basic sanitation facilities outside the premises have been neglected. They said the stench emanating from the lavatories has become unbearable, raising concerns about public health and hygiene.

The devotees appealed to the concerned authorities and shrine management to take immediate steps to ensure regular cleaning and maintenance of the washrooms. They said proper sanitation facilities are essential to preserve the sanctity of the shrine and ensure comfort for worshippers.

Locals of the area also called for a sustainable cleanliness mechanism, including regular monitoring and deployment of sanitation staff, to prevent recurrence of such conditions, especially during peak visiting hours.
